Los Angeles, CA C hemical engineers like Dr. James Wong apply the principles of chemistry, biology, physics, and math to solve problems that involve the production or use of chemicals, fuel, drugs, food and many other products. Dr. Wong amassed 40 years of professional experience in the field. To prepare for his career he earned a Bachelor of Science in agriculture andaBachelor of Science in engineering from the University of Maryland and a Master of Science and PhD from the University of Illinois. From 1961 to 1981, he worked at Dart Industries Inc., formerly, Rexall Drug & Chemical Company, a company thatmanufactures andmarkets consumer products, chemicals and plastics and packaging products in various positions, including senior planning engineer, principal planning engineer, supervisor of planning and economics, manager of long range planning and economics, director of economics and operations analysis and director of international technologies. When the company sold its drug portion they began looking for a chief economist to handle its major operation and found Dr. Wong who was well versed in chemical and plastics. Before taking on the role, they sent him to Harvard Business School and UCLA to prepare himself to assume the role of chief economist for the chemical and plastics group; the largest group at Dart Industries, Inc. Dr. Wong retired from the field in 1991, however, remains active within his community serving as Grand Marshall, president and on the board of directors of the Chinese AmericanCitizens Alliance. His contribution to the field aided him in being the first person to introduce embryo transfer of milk cattle from the United States to China resulting in Holsteinmilk cows in China. He is affiliated with the American Chemical Society, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the Commodores, Sigma Xi, Tau Beta Pi, Phi Kappa Phi, Phi Mu Epsilon, Phi Lambda Upsilon and Phi Eta Sigma.
