DRAIN, PHD T he daughter of an engineer, Karin Nadja Douglas watched her father tinker with projects, amazed by his work and technological prowess. Shadowing her father, she gained a skill set of her own, which underscored her lifelong commitment to curiosity, scholarship and academic pursuits. Ms. Douglas began her career as an apprentice in technical drafting and design in Switzerland in 1961 before immigrating to the United States and working as an electrical designer for the UOP Air Correction Division in Norwalk, Connecticut. Subsequent to these roles, Ms. Douglas served as an engineering consultant for various firms in Fairfield County, Connecticut, and concluded her career with ITT Flygt Corporation, where she was a regulatory agency compliance coordinator until her retirement in 2005. Having been one of few women in a male-dominated field, she consistently worked harder than her male counterparts, becoming a wielder of force and breaking barriers. In her retirement, Ms. Douglas is involved with the Yale School of Public Health, where she serves on the advisory committee of the department of aging. She enjoys helping breast cancer patients make informed decisions regarding their treatment options. ENGINEER ITT Flygt Corporation Trumbull, CT KARIN NADJA DOUGLAS
