448 MILLENNIUM-SECOND EDITION A s a professional engineer, Donald William Fryrear has shared his expertise to help develop many of the tools used daily. After earning a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Engineering from Colorado State University in 1959, he began working with the USDA-Agricultural Research Service as an engineer. He continued working for the company in various capacities ending his tenure there as a research leader in 1997 and became a consultant in the field from 1998 until 2018. Mr. Fryrear’s has achieved much in his career, including developing a graded furrow concept for controlling water erosion; techniques for analyzing field erosion and data; designing and constructing seven wind tunnels as well as the first field equipment for measuring wind erosion during his time with the USDA. In the process, the BSNE he developed has been used on every continent in the world to date. As a result of this effort, Mr. Fryrear was asked to modify the BSNE to create a device that can be used to measure the amount of dust being eroded on the planet Mars. Franke began studying languages at an early age. Following a life-changing experience as an exchange student in Germany, he returned to the United States and earnestly began his study of German, French and Spanish. Dr. Franke went on to join the U.S. Army, through which he studied Russian at the Defense Language Institute. This decision ultimately led to additional positions of responsibility, culminating with his current role as an institutional researcher and professor.
