A Marquis Who's Who Magazine 463 S pecializing in robotic thoracic surgery and thoracic oncology, Samer Azzam Kanaan is an attending physician for several prestigious institutions in Southern California, including Hoag Memorial, Saddleback Memorial, Mission Hospital and St. Joseph’s Orange Hospital. In addition to being certified by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, Dr. Kanaan earned a Bachelor of Arts, Doctor of Medicine, completed his general surgery residency at Northwestern University and his cardiothoracic surgery Fellowship at the University of Southern California. He also completed a research fellowship in lung transplantation at Washington University, awarded with the NIH National Research Service Award. He concluded his training in minimally invasive thoracic surgery and thoracic oncology at Harvard’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital. For his patients, he employs minimally invasive surgical techniques such as robotic assisted technology and video-assisted thoracic surgery to deliver state of the art, high quality and compassionate care. Looking to the future, Dr. Kanaan hope to create and direct a Lung Cancer Center of Excellence and a Center of Excellence in Robotic Surgery, where he can train other surgeons in the latest techniques. Serge Kalmykov was brought up in a small town with a vibrant research and development community focused on defense tasks. The occupation of engineer-physicist had been highly regarded at the time in his country, making the career worth pursuing. He has had the honor of meeting great teachers as sources of inspiration along the way. Dr. Kalmykov’s achievements have been recognized by the OSA and IEEE, of which he is a Senior Member. On the academic side of the spectrum, serving as an adjunct professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, he is sharing his knowledge, believing that well- trained students are of vital necessity to the U.S. One of his career highlights was understanding the nature of electron beam formation in the laser wakefield accelerator, opening the path to all-optical control of electron beam properties. Dr. Kalmykov has authored 43 scholarly articles in scientific journals, four book chapters and 31 full-text conference proceedings, and has delivered 12 invited talks.
