472 MILLENNIUM-SECOND EDITION B est known for his work in X-linked intellectual disability, beginning with the report of Fragile X syndrome, Dr. Herbert Augustus Lubs has dedicated 49 years to finding the cause of mental disabilities and related genetic diseases. As both a clinician and researcher, he has identified a number of genetic factors that contribute to inherited cognitive conditions. To prepare for his career, he earned a Bachelor of Arts from Washington and Lee University and a Doctor of Medicine from Yale University. He began interning at Yale-New Haven Hospital and shortly after worked with the U.S. Public Health Service as a clinical associate for the endocrinology branch of the National Cancer Institute. He continued to rise as a clinician, earning positions with a VA hospital and the Yale Private Diagnostic Clinic. In 1963, he deviated from clinical practice to serve as an assistant professor of medicine at the Yale School of Medicine. Dr. Hubs has held the title of professor emeritus at the Leonard M.
