482 MILLENNIUM-SECOND EDITION D r. Murray Griffin Murphey formerly taught the history of philosophy at the University of Pennsylvania, where he remained for the duration of his career. After beginning his tenure as an assistant professor at the university in 1956, he became an associate professor in 1961 and a full professor in 1966, a position he held until his retirement in 2000. During this time, he also served as chairman of the department of American civilization from 1969 to 1981 and again from 1987 to 1994. The recipient of a BA from Harvard University and PhD from Yale University, Dr. Murphey is most renowned for the publication of his first book, “The Development of Peirce’s Philosophy” in 1961. As a result of the book’s success, the Charles S. Peirce International Centennial Congress conducted a session on Dr. Murphey in 2014, which he cites as a highlight of his career. In recognition of his exceptional contributions to education, Dr. Murphey has received several accolades throughout his career, including the Carl Bode- Norman Holmes Pearson Prize for lifetime achievement and service within American studies in 2004.
