A Marquis Who's Who Magazine 497 For four decades Marion Smart specialized in veterinary nutrition. Dr. Smart received a DMV from OVC University of Guelph, a diploma in veterinary pathology from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM), and a PhD from the department of animal and poultry science at the University of Saskatchewan. In addition to a Medical Research Council Fellowship, she received over $500,000 to fund research. Dr. Smart’s career has many firsts. At DVM graduation, she was the first woman awarded the Andrew Smith Memorial Gold Medal for general proficiency and the first woman full professor in large animal medicine at WCVM. She developed the first elective in companion animal nutrition for final year veterinary students, was chosen as one of the top 25 graduates from OVC for her work in pathology, and was co-chair of the Women’s Studies Research unit on the executive Faculty Association. She has published and given seminars on nutrition. Upon retirement, Dr. Smart developed an app, “SNAP,” which follows the impact of diet on the health over a pet’s lifetime. PROFESSOR (RETIRED) Saskatoon, SK MARION E. SMART, PHD B efore embarking on a career in academia, Robert Singleton served in the United States Army as a first class specialist from 1954 to 1957. Soon after leaving the Army, Dr. Singleton earned an undergraduate degree and a PhD at UCLA. He began his professional career as a chief researcher for the Institute of Industrial Relations and took on roles as an economist with the U.S. Department of Labor and the California State Assembly Office of Research from 1965 to 1969. Shortly after, he ventured into postsecondary education by teaching at his alma mater, where his activismwas ignited. During his time at the university he became inspired by many of the speakers who came to enlighten students, including James Farmer, Malcolm X, James Baldwin and Langston Hughes. Dr. Singleton also joined his first sit-in and ran for president of the school’s chapter of the NAACP, which was replaced with a CORE group, of which he served as chair. He and his wife were Freedom Riders protesting against segregation on public transportation and were recently honored for their contributions by being invited to the White House to meet President Obama.
