508 MILLENNIUM-SECOND EDITION M otivated by the experiences of those around him, Dr. George E. Woody chose to pursue a career as a psychiatrist who specializes in addiction treatment and research. He received an MD from Temple University in 1964 prior to completing additional training in the field. Now, more than five decades later, Dr. Woody is widely regarded for his focus on treatment outcome studies in substance use disorders. He has written extensively on the subject, with one of his most recent co-authored publications being “Rates of abuse of tramadol remain unchanged with the introduction of new branded generic products: results of an abuse monitoring system, 1994-2004.” In addition, Dr. Woody is an associate editor of the Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment and the Journal of Addiction Medicine, as well as a lifetime fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. As a professor of psychiatry within the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, a position he has held since the turn of the century, Dr. Woody has been invited to speak nationally and internationally. Dr. Wolfel became involved in this profession because he enjoyed the physiology of the cardiovascular system. He specializes in heart failure and disease, cardiovascular rehabilitation, and heart transplants. Having served as professor of medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine since 1997, he earned a Bachelor of Science in biology from Villanova University, a Master of Arts in biochemistry from Bryn Mawr College, and a Doctor of Medicine from Jefferson Medical College. He began his career practicing medicine as a physician in the rehabilitation program at the Coors Wellness Center from 1982 to 1984. In 1983 he made a home at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, where he has served as an assistant professor, associate professor of medicine, director of the cardiology fellowship training program, and associate director of the division of cardiology. Dr. Wolfel remains active in the field as a member of the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation and the Heart Failure Society of America.
