84 MILLENNIUM-SECOND EDITION Mr. Charry is a member of the Association for Recorded Sound Collections (ARSC), the League of American Orchestras and the American Federation of Musicians. He was also a former president of the Conductors Guild, Inc. A multifaceted individual, Mr. Charry wrote a biography of his mentor, titled “George Szell: A Life of Music,” published by the University of Illinois Press. A Fulbright scholar, Mr. Charry has received several accolades, including the Best Historical Research in Recorded Classical Music Award from the ARSC in 2012, the Special Merit Award from the Tennessee Arts Commission in 1982, and the Alice M. DitsonAward fromColumbia University in 1981. He is also a three-time grantee of the Elizabeth Ring Mather and William Gwinn Mather Fund and has been included in many editions of Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in Entertainment. In 2018 Mr. Charry was presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. A faculty member in the Mannes School of Music at The New School since 1988, Michael Charry has amassed over 60 years of experience as a musician and educator. From the time he was 3 years old, he was passionate about music and sought to pursue music as a full-time career. After attending the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music and the Pierre Monteux School for Conductors, he received a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in orchestral conducting in the class of Jean Morel from The Juilliard School in 1955 and 1956, respectively. Mr. Charry has held conducting positions with the Rhode Island Philharmonic, the Canton and Nashville Symphonies, The Cleveland Orchestra, and The Mannes Orchestra. He has also traveled extensively as a conductor and pianist with the José Limón Dance Company to South and Central America, Europe, East Asia, and locations across the United States. He has guest conducted orchestras and opera in the United States and internationally. However, the highlight of his career was auditioning for the renowned George Szell, leading to an 11-year association with The Cleveland Orchestra, considered to be [ha]one of the greatest conductors and orchestras of the 20th century.
