88 MILLENNIUM-SECOND EDITION DAVID TAK WAI CHIU SURGEON NYU Langone Medical Center New York, NY A diplomate of the American Board of Plastic Surgery, Dr. David Tak Wai Chiu has made a significant impact in his profession. Since 2006, Dr. Chiu has served as the chief of hand service of the plastic surgery department at NYU Langone Medical Center. He received a doctorate in medicine from Columbia University and was an intern and resident in general surgery at Barnes Hospital, a plastic surgery resident at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, and a fellow at NYU Langone Medical Center, where he served as a faculty member from 1981 to 1989. In 1989, he was recruited back to Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, first as associate director, and later as director of the plastic surgery service and microsurgery and hand surgery fellowship until 2001. The same year, he founded the Center for Restorative Surgery, where he is in private practice, and rejoined the NYU faculty as a professor of plastic surgery and neurosurgery. He is also an adjunct professor of cell biology and pathology at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. Dr. Chiu was selected by his peers as the Best Doctor in America inmicrosurgery, hand surgery, peripheral nerve surgery and cosmetic surgery over the last decade. He has directed the hand fellowship of NYU since 2006. Academically, he has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles and chapters. He also published a lab manual, “Introduction to Microsurgery,” and is currently writing another book on thumb and finger reconstruction. In research, he conceptualized and pioneered clinical application of autogenous venous conduit, for which he received the Hanno Millesi Award in 2013. He has been a member of numerous professional organizations and was elected to leadership positionswith the American Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery, the American Society for Peripheral Nerve, the New York Society for Surgery of the Hand, the New York Regional Society of Plastic Surgeons, and the Sunderland Society. Additionally, he founded the Federation of American Chinese and Chinese Canadian Medical Societies. Looking to the future, Dr. Chiu intends to devote more time to writing scientific and philosophical literature and pursuing his artistic and musical interests.
