92 MILLENNIUM-SECOND EDITION W ith certifications in medical oncology and hematology, Dr. Bertrand Coiffier has dedicated his life’s work to the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of blood diseases and cancer. He served as a professor of hematology in the department of hematology and head of the department at Hospices Civils de Lyon and the Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1 in Lyon, France. His specialization in hematology led him to various positions in the hematology department of the Edouard-Herriot Hospital and the Centre Hospitalier Lyon-Sud in Pierre- Bénite. Dr. Coiffier is a founding member and treasurer of Groupe d’Etudes des Lymphomes de l’Adulte and has served as its president since 2006. He started the group in 1984 to bring together French and Belgian physicians interested in the treatment of lymphomas. Additionally, he has coordinated several clinical trials on lymphoma. He prepared for his successful career by earning a Doctor of Medicine and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Lyon in 1974 and 1980, respectively. Dr. Coiffier’s hard work and dedication have earned him many awards, including the Kaplan Lecture and San Salvatore Prize in 2008, as well as the John Ultmann Award for outstanding contributions to the treatment of lymphoma. He recently created the European Lymphoma Institute, a collaborative group of specialists committed to improving research and treatment standards, and serves as the organization’s president. He has shared his breadth of knowledge in more than 400 peer-reviewed journals and served as a former editor of the Journal of Leukemia Research. Although Dr. Coiffier is now retired, he remains abreast of the field as a member of the American Society of Hematology, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the International Society for Medical Oncology, the European Hematology Association, and the European Society for Medical Oncology. Dr. Coiffier has been featured in the fifth edition of Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare, the eighth edition of Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, and the 20th through 24th editions of Who’s Who in the World.
