164 MILLENNIUM-SECOND EDITION J ohn Hall Jr. has nearly 40 years of professional experience in fire safety. While serving as division director of fire analysis and research for the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) from 1984 to 2014, Dr. Hall achieved a great deal, including conducting research on modeling and conceptual framework innovations in fire risk analysis in the United States. He also spearheaded the completion of the first ISO standard on fire risk assessment. During his tenure with NFPA he created the name “One Stop Data Shop” as a way to describe the organization’s ambition to be a complete source of statistics related to decision-making in fire safety and fire services. Inspired by his father, who was a first-generation operations research professional, Dr. Hall graduated cum laude from Brown University in 1967 with a Bachelor of Arts and subsequently earned a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1972. Prior to his dynamic work in fire safety, he served as a research analyst for the Resource Management Corporation for a year before becoming a senior research associate for the Urban Institute from 1973 to 1979. He later worked as an operations research analyst for both the U.S. Fire Administration in Washington, D.C., and the National Bureau of Standards Center for Fire Research. Dr. Hall is the co-author and editor of several fire safety manuals and handbooks. He has received many accolades, including four Certificates of Outstanding Performance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, a Certificate of Special Achievement, a Certificate of Recognition from the National Bureau of Standards, and the Leadership Giving Award from United Way of Neponset Valley. He has served as chairman of the Fire Safety Institute and the Fire Protection Commission since 2004 and 1986, respectively. JOHN HALL JR.
