A Marquis Who's Who Magazine 167 Millennium Magazine Featured Listee F ollowing her father’s advice, Mary L. Harmon earned an accounting degree from the University of Arkansas early in her career. After being credentialed as a CPA, Ms. Harmon went on to work for the Arkansas Legislative Audit, a section within the legislative branch of the state government that is responsible for auditing county governments. Through her involvement with the organization, she gained significant exposure to the procedures of the courts and prosecuting attorney’s office. In addition, she was afforded the opportunity to meet with many lawyers in that particular field of practice, which prompted her to attend law school and pursue a similar career. After receiving a JD from the University of Arkansas in 1984, Ms. Harmon relocated to New York City with the sole intention of completing an intensive one-year tax program. Although she had initially planned to leave once she completed her studies, she ultimately stayed, having generated an impressive and extensive professional network while earning a Master of Laws. Since the turn of the century, Ms. Harmon has served as a managing director and tax counsel with Goldman Sachs, a leading global investment banking, securities and investment management firm known for providing a variety of financial services to corporations, financial institutions, governments and individuals, among other clients. In this position, she draws upon her broad range of training and experience in financial services and tax law to serve as a leader within the organization. Although Ms. Harmon takes great pride in her role with Goldman Sachs, the highlight of her career was serving as special counsel to the chief counsel of the Internal Revenue Service.
