176 MILLENNIUM-SECOND EDITION L ikemany scientists, Dr. David P. Hill has always been driven by an insatiable desire to understand how the world works. While completing an undergraduate education at San Jose State University, he chose to focus on geology, and more specifically, geophysics, which would allow him to study the more quantitative aspects of the field. He went on to receive a Master of Science from the Colorado School of Mines and a PhD from the California Institute of Technology. Early in his career, Dr. Hill was invited to join the United States Geological Survey, a division of the U.S. Department of the Interior that aims to provide information and advancements in the study of natural science. Through his involvement with the organization, he was able to work as a staff seismologist with the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, among other exciting appointments. Now a recognized expert in seismology, volcanology and tectonics research, he considers the greatest highlight of his career to be his participation in a study that examined how large earthquakes can trigger smaller earthquakes. Prior to his retirement in 2010, Dr. Hill maintained involvement with the United States Geological Survey for nearly four decades. During this time, he was awarded a Distinguished Public Service Medal from the Mineralogical Society of America, as well as a Meritorious Service Award from the U.S. Department of the Interior. Dr. Hill has been named a fellow of the American Geophysical Union, the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Seismological Society of America. An associate editor of the Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research, he is noted for previous contributions to the Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America and the Journal of Geophysical Research. Since the beginning of his career, Dr. Hill has authored 82 publications in his areas of expertise. DAVID P. HILL, PHD SCIENTIST EMERITUS United States Geological Survey Palo Alto, CA
