184 MILLENNIUM-SECOND EDITION A prominent figure in the field of finance, Melvin Howard has had a fulfilling career of more than 35 years, during which he has served in a number of executive roles. Commencing his career as a financial executive for the Ford Motor Company in 1959, he was subsequently the vice president of administration for the Shoe Corporation of America, Inc., from 1967 to 1970. Thereafter, he held multiple positions with the Xerox Corporation beginning in 1970, including controller, senior vice president of finance, chief financial officer, executive vice president, chairman of financial services, board member and vice chairman of the board. After retiring from Xerox in 1990, he briefly served Ehrlich Bober & Company as president and chief executive officer and the Taurus Advisory Group LLC as managing director until his retirement from the industry in 1995. Mr. Howard holds a BA from the University of Massachusetts and an MBA from Columbia University. Upon graduating from the Columbia Business School, he was personally asked by Mr. Ford himself to work in the controller’s office for the Ford Motor Company. In addition, he headed Beta Gamma Sigma for three years following the receipt of his business degree. In his spare time, Mr. Howard serves as a trustee in nursing and home care with the University of Massachusetts Amherst and the chairman of Commonwealth Honors College. He has also been a board member of Gould Pumps, Inc., and Sector Management, Inc. His involvement with various charities has led him to travel internationally and provided him the opportunity to meet a diverse range of individuals and serve on a number of boards. Mr. Howard has been married to Vivien K. Weissman since 2005 and has two children, Brian and Marjorie. Impressively, he was a first lieutenant in the United States Army in 1957. He has been highlighted in several editions of Who’s Who in Finance and Business, Who’s Who in Finance and Industry, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in the East, Who’s Who in the South and Southwest, and Who’s Who in the World.
