242 MILLENNIUM-SECOND EDITION A fter earning a Bachelor of Arts from Michigan State University in 1964 and a Juris Doctor from the University of Michigan in 1967, Richard D. McLellan began a career in the legal field. He worked at a private practice in Lansing, Michigan, before becoming an administrative assistant to former Governor William G. Milliken. His experience in both positions led him to become partner of McLellan, Schlaybaugh & Whitbeck and member-in-charge of the government policy group for Dykema Gossett PLLC. In 2010, he founded the McLellan Law Offices, PLLC, a firm that offers professional consultation and legal services in the areas of administrative and regulated industries law, education policy, public policy, Native American law, Sub-Saharan African matters, and campaign finance and election law. Aside from his career in the legal field, Mr. McLellan teaches international studies as an adjunct professor and serves as a trustee of his alma mater, Michigan State University. He has extended his services as a transition director for the Michigan Office of the Governor-Elect, a commissioner for the State Bar of Michigan, co-chairman of the Justice Initiatives Committee, and chairman of the Qualifications Review Committee. In 1990 he argued on the side of the appellate in the United States Supreme Court case of Austin v. Michigan Chamber of Commerce. Mr. McLellan’s contributions to the field earned him the Small Business Adviser of the Year Award from the Small Business Administration in 1983. He is affiliated with many organizations, including the American Bar Association, the International Bar Association, the Campaign for Justice, the Republican National Lawyers Association, and the American Counsel Association.
