A Marquis Who's Who Magazine 245 D r. Megrue earned a BA in 1957 from Amherst College, an MA in geology in 1960, and a PhD in geology in 1962 from Columbia University before serving as a research scientist in the chemistry department at Brookhaven National Laboratory from 1962 to 1966. He was a research scientist at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory and Harvard College Observatory from 1967 to 1974. His research studies, presented at various international scientific conferences, included detecting cosmic dust in ocean sediments, analyzing meteorites and lunar rocks for rare gas nuclides, and determining the rate of continental drifting in the Ethiopian Rift Valley. He was honored by the National Geographic Society for his contributions to the Ethiopian Rift Valley expedition in 1968 and was appointed principal investigator for NASA’s Apollo 12, 14 and 15 lunar missions. Dr. Megrue received a patent for a system and technique for gas analysis used to analyze small materials, such as meteorites, lunar rocks and soils from the Apollo 12, 14 and 15 missions. This involved using a laser to extract gases from soil samples or rocks and analyzing the nuclides of helium, neon and argon. In 1974, he founded Megrue Microanalytical Systems, serving as chief executive officer to develop techniques for analyzing small quantities of materials by laser irradiation and detecting volatilized components using mass spectrometry. In 1975, he co-founded Foxglove School, Inc., acting as secretary until it closed in 1988. Dr. Megrue began studying sculpture and drawing at the Silvermine Art School in 1976 and continued doing so for many years. He was influenced by two great mentors, Robert Reed and José de Creeft, and was later taught by Mark Prent how to cast human figures using fiberglass and nontoxic binders. He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, a member of the American Geophysical Union, the American Chemical Society, The Explorers Club, and was president of the New Canaan Rotary International from 1985 to 1986. He co-founded the New Canaan Rotary Austrian summer exchange and the New Canaan Rotary Lobsterfest. GEORGE H.
