A Marquis Who's Who Magazine 247 D r. Dunstana Rabelo Melo has more than 30 years of experience in radiation protection, dosimetry, biokinetics, and the biological effects of internally deposited radionuclides. Dr. Melo’s work in the field has been focused on developing methods for removing radionuclides from the body, as well as studying the mechanisms of deposition, clearance and retention of radioactive materials in the body. She recently established Melohill Technology LLC, a woman-owned firm specializing in researching, preventing and treating negative health effects related to radiation, and serves as its senior research specialist. Throughout her career, Dr. Melo has acquired many leadership positions. She worked at the Institute of Radiation Protection and Dosimetry for 30 years and was head of its division on internal monitoring. She also had the opportunity to lead several projects on dose reconstruction for patients treated with I-131 and for United States patients who had undergone X-ray diagnostic procedures and nuclear diagnostic procedures. Additionally, she gained experience acting as a radiation dosimetrist during the CS-137 radiological accident in Goiânia, Brazil in 1987. Dr. Melo joined the radiation epidemiology branch of the National Cancer Institute as part of the dosimetry group in 2006 and the Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute as director of the Center for Countermeasures Against Radiation in 2013, where she managed and mentored a group of Ph.D. students. Dr. Melo has been a member of many national and international scientific communities, including the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements, the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation, the International Commission on Radiological Protection, and the International Atomic Energy Agency. Dr. Melo earned a Bachelor of Science in biology, a Master of Science in biophysics, and a PhD in biophysics from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. Looking to the future, she plans to train young professionals in the field to continue the work she has begun in her career and develop drugs to combat the health effects of radiation exposure.
