282 MILLENNIUM-SECOND EDITION W ith more than 55 years of experience, Mary M. O’Leary is a respected nurse and administrator who has served the Michael Reese Hospital and Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois, in several capacities, including as director of nursing education, evaluation and research since 1980; director of psychiatric and respite care nursing; and an administrative director in the department of psychiatry since 1988. She has also been a consultant for the Ascellon Corporation in Landover, Maryland, since 2001 and a patient advocate in St. Helena, California, since 2013. Prior to these roles, Ms. O’Leary served in a number of nursing and upper administrative roles with several facilities, including Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Hospital, the University of Illinois Hospital, Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford University, and St. Helena Hospital. Notably, she served the Chicago Board of Education as a school nurse in the 1970s, where she participated in the Child-Parent Center Program, which she cites as a highlight of her career. To prepare for her career, Ms. O’Leary pursued formal education at Villanova University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1963. After completing postgraduate work at the National College of Education, she attended the University of Illinois and received a Master’s in Health Professions Education in 1979. Ms. O’Leary has since contributed numerous articles to professional journals and lectured extensively across the United States. She also briefly served as a consultant for theWorldHealthOrganization. Affiliated with the American Organization of Nurse Executives, Ms. O’Leary is also a committee member of Honoring Choices Napa Valley, an organization comprised of hospital and hospice administrators and other health care providers focused on helping others complete advanced care directives. She also volunteers at the local movie theater in a variety of student and adult programs. As a testament to her success, Ms. O’Leary was named a Janssen Clinical Scholar at the ninth annual U.S. Psychiatric and Mental Health Congress in San Diego, California, in 1996. She was featured in the first edition of Who’s Who of Emerging Leaders in America, and the 20th edition of Who’s Who in the Midwest. MARY M.
