42 MILLENNIUM-SECOND EDITION I nterested in becoming an educator since her formative years, Janice Downey Andrews would pretend to be a teacher as a child and educate her dolls on various subjects. As a young adult, she attended the University of Tampa, where she received a Bachelor of Science in 1969. After gaining experience in the field, she transferred to the University of South Florida, earning a Master of Arts in 1977. She was a certified elementary school teacher in the state of Florida, and she also holds a certification in English for speakers of other languages. Attributing her profound success to her mentors – including her first grade teacher, Mrs. Anderson, and her aunt, Lelia Lamb – Ms. Andrews formerly taught for Hillsborough County Public Schools in Tampa, Florida, for several years. This appointment was preceded by a teaching role in Pinellas County Schools in St. Petersburg, Florida. Equally passionate about her community, she formerly volunteered at The Stream. In an effort to remain aware of recent developments within the education industry, Ms. Andrews has maintained membership with the National Education Association and the Hillsborough Classroom Teachers Association, as well as Kappa Delta Pi and Phi Delta Kappa. The most gratifying moments in her career were when students would acknowledge and understand her lessons, making connections between concrete and abstract ideas to further the educational process. Although she is now retired, she still receives Christmas cards from some of her former students. Ms. Andrews was nominated for Teacher of the Year by Tinker Elementary School in 2004 and 2005 and was inducted into the ULEMA Honorary Scholastic Society through the University of Tampa in 1967. She was also included in the 63rd edition of Who’s Who in America, as well as multiple editions of Who’s Who in American Education and Who’s Who of American Women.
