Arison, a distinguished researcher in the realm of atomic chemistry, started his career in 1944 after being invited by DuPont to participate in the Manhattan Project, a research and development endeavor during World War II that produced the first nuclear weapons. A member of the research staff in Hanford, Washington, he dealt primarily with nuclear reactors and uranium, a chemical element that was used as fuel for the reactors. Subsequent to this appointment, he was a chemist at the Hanford Site in affiliation with the University of Chicago for one year. He then spent the majority of his career as a research chemist and director of the department of metabolism at Merck & Company from 1947 until his retirement in 2004. Dr. Arison holds a BS in chemistry from the University of Michigan and an MS and PhD in organic chemistry from the New York University Tandon School of Engineering. A contributor of more than 200 articles to professional journals in his areas of expertise, he has conducted research on 50 patents throughout his memorable career. Since 2004, he has remained a consultant for the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Facility. A longtime member of the American Chemical Society, Dr. Arison has given speeches at various conferences with respect to his experiences as part of the Manhattan Project. In 2015, he spoke to the Old Guard of Summit in a talk titled “My Personal Experiences on the Manhattan Project: the Making of the Atomic Bomb,” and he frequently speaks before the Fellowship Village residential facility, his local Kiwanis Club, and independent living facilities. He attributes his profound success to his public speaking abilities and mindfulness to avoid jargon in order to appeal to his audience.
