96 MILLENNIUM-SECOND EDITION PAULYN M. COX ELEMENTARY SCHOOL EDUCATOR Fonda Board of Education Rotterdam Junction, NY I nspired to pursue a career in education during her formative years, Paulyn M. Cox was influenced by her cousin, father and mother, who were all involved in professions helping others. After earning a Bachelor of Arts from Ithaca College in 1958, she became a certified teacher in New York. Throughout her career, she has served as an elementary teacher and reading teacher for the boards of education in various cities across Ohio and New York. Ms. Cox prides herself on her ability to ensure that her students are comfortable asking questions in the classroom. As a result, she has found that her students work more diligently. Alongside her primary endeavors, Ms. Cox has acted in multiple roles within her community, including as a mentor at the Brown School in Schenectady, NewYork. A natural humanitarian, she does weekly visits at the Schenectady Center for Rehab and Nursing and volunteers with 7the Baptist Health Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and the YWCA of Schenectady. She also participates in CROP Hunger Walks annually. Intrinsically extroverted and bursting with compassion, she strives to be surrounded by people on a daily basis in order to help them through their struggles. As a testament to her dedication to serving others, Ms. Cox was the recipient of the Sister Rachel Award from the Schenectady Inner CityMinistry in 1998. She maintains affiliation with the American Association of University Women, the American Federation of Teachers and Amnesty International, among other prominent organizations. She defines success as achieving happiness and satisfaction with one’s personal growth, and she considers it a great privilege to be able to develop close connections with her students, as she has learned as much from them as they have from her. A native of Oberlin, Ohio, Ms. Cox enjoys reading, listening to music, walking, gardening and singing, which she has done in choral groups since the age of 8, in her spare time. Her greatest joy, however, is spending time with family. She has been highlighted in several editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Education and Who’s Who of American Women.
