A Marquis Who's Who Magazine 97 A native of Berlin, Germany, Dr. Mechthild Cranston immigrated to the United States in 1951, after growing up in an area where she was exposed to a vast array of languages. She subsequently earned a BA and PhD from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1958 and 1966, respectively, specializing in the study of Romance Languages and Literatures. Since MECHTHILD CRANSTON, PHD PROFESSOR EMERITA Clemson University Clemson, SC commencing her career as French instructor at the University of California in 1965, she has proven herself to be a distinguished educator whose career has spanned nearly four decades. Throughout her career, Dr. Cranston has served multiple academic institutions, including the University of San Francisco, California State University, the University of North Carolina Asheville, and most recently, Clemson University. Beginning in 1985, she was a professor of French with Clemson University until reaching emerita status in 2004. She also taught Latin and Italian when needed. In addition to her primary positions, she was a visiting professor at Philipps-Universität in Marburg, Germany, in 1970. A prolific author, Dr. Cranston has contributed numerous articles to journals like PMLA and is the author of five books, including “Beyond the Book: Marguerite Duras: Infans,” which was published in 1996 and “Mains serrées. Poèmes en trois langues,” published in 1971. In addition, she has edited two books, “Tones/ Countertones” in 2002, with translations from six languages, and “Le Gai Savoir: Essays in Linguistics, Philosophy and Criticism” in 1983, dedicated to Manfred Sandmann. In an effort to remain aware of recent developments within the profession, Dr. Cranston maintained affiliation with the Modern Language Association of America and the Society for Comparative Literature and the Arts. She has accrued numerous accolades, including the Chevalier des Palmes Académiques Award from the French Ministry of Education in 1993, which she considers to be a highlight of her career, and several grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities. She was also highlighted in the 65th edition of Who’s Who in America.
