Martin Alan Menter has a long-held interest in psoriasis and psoriatic disease research that examines ultraviolet therapy, biologic therapy and the mapping of genetic patterns to predict if a person is at risk of developing psoriasis. As a graduate of the medical school of the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa, he completed his dermatology residency at Pretoria General Hospital at the University of Pretoria, as well as fellowships at Guy’s Hospital and St. John’s Hospital for Diseases of the Skin. He migrated to the United States upon earning a fellowship at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. After completing his residency and fellowship, he began practicing within the University of Texas and Baylor University systems, earning many positions. His most crucial role would come in 2004, when he founded the International Psoriasis Council to raise international awareness of psoriasis as a serious autoimmune disease that can significantly impact quality of life. Dedicated to his research, Dr. Menter’s clinical practice includes more than 1,600 patients on systemic and biologic therapy and phototherapy. Outside of the clinic, his research has been published in four books, and he has written 318 articles appearing in professional journals. From 1993 to 2003 he served as a member of the editorial board of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology. He serves in an administrative capacity as chair of the dermatology residency program and chairman of the division of dermatology at Baylor University Medical Center, as well as director of the Baylor Psoriasis Research Center and a clinical professor of dermatology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. Additionally, he extends his knowledge as a presenter in the field. In recognition of Dr. Menter’s groundbreaking work and research, on February 18, 2018 he received the Presidential Citation Award from the American Academy of Dermatology.
