378 MILLENNIUM-SECOND EDITION D r. Alvin W. Trivelpiece is a distinguished scientist who most recently acted as a consultant for Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, New Mexico, from 2000 to 2017. Now retired, he continues to serve on the board of trustees for the National Atomic Testing Museum. Prior to these appointments, he held multiple roles with several corporations, laboratories and academic institutions, commencing his career as an assistant professor at the University of California, Berkeley, in 1959. Since that time, he has worked for the University of Maryland, the Atomic Energy Commission, Maxwell Technologies, the U.S. Department of Energy, the Lockheed Martin Corporation and Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Dr. Trivelpiece holds a BEE from California Polytechnic State University and an MEE and PhD in electrical engineering and physics from the California Institute of Technology. He has contributed articles to professional journals throughout his career and authored two books, “Principles of Plasma Physics” and “Slow-Wave Propagation in Plasma Waveguides.” A patentee in the industry, he is most renowned for being the first person to reprogram $4 million to initiate the Human Genome Project and guided 20 PhD students in obtaining their doctorates. A fellow of many societies, including the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the American Physical Society, Dr. Trivelpiece has attained several honors in recognition of his scientific contributions. In addition to multiple prizes from Global Energy International, he received a TennesseeOutstanding Service Commendation, an Outstanding Engineer Award from region three of the IEEE, and a Gold Medal for Distinguished Service from the United States Secretary of Energy. Additional honors Dr. Trivelpiece has accrued include being named a Distinguished Alumnus by California Polytechnic State University and the California Institute of Technology, as well as a Distinguished Associate Award. He has also been selected for inclusion in numerous editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, Who’s Who in the South and Southwest, Who’s Who in the West, and Who’s Who in the World.
