A Marquis Who's Who Magazine 381 T ravis Earl Tyer stumbled upon library sciences as a career choice by mere chance. Mr. Tyer was teaching in public schools in Texas when he was informed that there was a need for a librarian. Being the dedicated professional he is, he took on the responsibility and discovered that he possessed a love and passion for library services. He earned a position with the Dallas Public Library in 1961 and was promoted to coordinator of young adult services a year later. His expertise led him to the role of library director for the Lubbock Public Library. In 1971, he returned to the academic setting, this time as a faculty member and state personnel coordinator for Emporia State University before serving as a senior professional development consultant for the Illinois State Library. Mr. Tyer enjoyed nearly every aspect of his profession, as it afforded him some amazing opportunities, including working with teenagers to review a great deal of adult material for their use and participating in continuing education efforts for library professionals. He successfully inspired others to join the field, bringing nearly four dozen people into the fold. Although he retired in 1997, he remained an independent consultant in the field until 2010. He also served as president of the resident council for Hickory Glen senior living facility, where he now resides. During his career, Mr. Tyer served as a lecturer for summer workshops at Texas Woman’s University, The University of Oklahoma, The University of Utah, Florida State University and the University of North Texas. He was inducted into the University of North Texas Library and Information Science Hall of Fame in 1990. Mr. Tyer is a member of the American Library Association, the Illinois Library Association and Friends of Libraries USA. He has been listed in multiple editions of Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in the Midwest. TRAVIS EARL TYER LIBRARIAN (RETIRED) Springfield, IL
