402 MILLENNIUM-SECOND EDITION D r. Beverly J. White is an esteemed medical geneticist who, prior to her 2008 retirement, most recently served as a medical director of cytogenetics at the Quest Diagnostics Nichols Institute in San Juan Capistrano, California. Having previously served Quest Diagnostics as medical director of the genetics division and associate medical director of cytogenetics between 1996 and 2002, she also formerly worked in multiple capacities for the National Institutes of Health beginning in the mid- 1960s. Throughout her career, she has utilized her wealth of knowledge during her employment with several other institutions, including Corning Clinical Laboratories, the University of Washington, and the University of California Medical Center. When Dr. White was a first-year medical student at the University of Washington, she served as a research trainee. Her research focal points included prenatal development, genetics and endocrinology. After graduating with an MD in 1963, she went on to serve as a rotating intern at Philadelphia General Hospital. Thereafter, she served as a research fellow in the medical obstetrics-gynecology unit at the University of CaliforniaMedical Center, a staff fellow in the National Institutes of Health Laboratory of Biomedical Sciences, and a pediatric resident at the University of Washington. Among the highlights of her career, Dr. White’s most gratifying experience involved examining and presenting data from employees at the National Institutes of Health at an equal employment opportunity conference using the Freedom of Information Act in 1971. This subsequently resulted in admitting female physicians as public health officers to their intramural clinical fellowship training programs. Dr. White has received the Reuben Award from the American Society for the Study of Sterility, theWomen of Excellence Award from the Seattle professional chapter of Women in Communications with the University of Washington, a Medical Thesis Award, and the Mosby Book Award. Notably, she was featured inWho’sWho in America, Who’sWho inMedicine andHealthcare, Who’sWho in Science and Engineering, Who’s Who in the East, Who’s Who in the West andWho’s Who of AmericanWomen.
