458 MILLENNIUM-SECOND EDITION D r. Robert A. Heller was born in Budapest, Hungary and immigrated to the United States in 1948. Inspired to enter the field of engineering by his father, he received an education at Columbia University, earning a BCE in 1951, an MCE in 1953, and a PhD in mechanics in 1958. During his time as a student, he served as a research assistant at the university then advanced to the rank of assistant professor of civil engineering upon receiving his doctorate. Having served Columbia University during his early career as an associate professor and director of the Institute for the Study of Fatigue and Reliability, Dr. Heller transferred to Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1967, where he served as a professor of engineering science and mechanics until 1995. From 1995 until attaining emeritus status in 1996, he was the Francis J. Maher Professor of Engineering. A contributor of over 100 articles to professional journals, Dr. Heller was a former Fulbright Scholar. He received an honorary doctorate from Budapest University of Technology and Economics and is featured in Who’s Who in the South and Southwest. HELLER, PHD F or more than four decades, Dr. Mark Hedges has evaluated and studied behavior and mental processes. After earning a Bachelor of Science from Purdue University and a Master of Arts and PhD from the University of South Dakota, he began practicing as a psychologist and director of psychological services at Northeastern Mental Health Center, a facility that approaches mental health care with hope, purpose and optimism. In 2003, he delved into academia as a school psychologist, serving in that position until his retirement in 2016. He concurrently served as a psychologist for Lutheran Social Services of New York. Dr. Hedges believes the most rewarding part of his career was seeing the development of specialized children’s services and funding over the years. He is a member of the Committee on Justice for Children, the American Psychological Association, the South Dakota Association of School Psychologists, Phi Beta Kappa, Psi Chi and Phi Kappa Phi. Dr. Hedges has been featured in Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, Who’s Who in the Midwest and Who’s Who in the World.
