80 MILLENNIUM-SECOND EDITION B oasting nearly 60 years of professional experience in politics, economics, international relations and history, Dr. David Patrick Calleo has always had a profound interest in learning about history and war. Prior to serving Johns Hopkins University as the Dean Acheson Chair in the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies and a full professor, Dr. Calleo commenced his career as an instructor in political science at Brown University in 1959. Throughout his tenure, he has risen through the ranks of success, first serving as an assistant professor of political science at Yale University during the 1960s and subsequently elevating to the role of consultant to the undersecretary for political affairs with the U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C. Thereafter, Dr. Calleo briefly served as vice president of the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History in New York City and a senior Fulbright lecturer in the Federal Republic of Germany. He also held the role of professor at universities overseas in cities as Paris, Geneva and Shanghai. Dr. Calleo sought an education at Yale University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in history of the arts and letters in 1955, followed by a Master of Arts in political science in 1957. He subsequently earned a Doctor of Philosophy in 1959, cementing the foundation of what would become an illustrious career. A prolific author, Dr. Calleo has penned numerous books, including “Europe’s Future,” “Britain’s Future,” “The American Political System,” “The Atlantic Fantasy” and The Imperious Economy.” A member of the American Political Science Association and the International Institute for Strategic Studies, Dr. Calleo has amassed several awards throughout his impressive career. He was considered a Guggenheim Fellow from 1966 to 1967 and a George Herbert Walker Bush Fellow by the American Academy in Berlin in 2005. He has been an associate fellow with the Jonathan Edwards College at Yale University since 1972. However, the highlights of his career have been witnessing his students succeed and establishing the history of the arts and letters program at Yale University.
