137 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine HEALTH AND WELLNESS S ara Ann Young was inspired to enter the field of nursing by her mother, who was a nurse. She always enjoyed the five components of the advanced practice nursing role, including the direct patient care at the bedside, leadership, education, consultation and research. Earning a BSN from West Virginia University in 1970, she later received a MSN from the Catholic University of America in 1977 and later became a certified bereavement counselor. After receiving her bachelor’s degree, Ms. Young was a staff nurse at the Camden Clark Memorial Hospital for two years before becoming head nurse of labor and delivery. For the following four years, she worked in Washington, D.C., as a staff nurse at the George Washington University Medical Center until her departure in 1978. For the final 33 years of her career, Ms. Young was an OB-GYN clinical nurse specialist at Hartford Hospital, retiring in 2011. After acquiring certification as an international board-certified lactation consultant in 1994, Ms. Young was given the primary responsibility of providing and managing the lactation services of Hartford Hospital. During the last seven years, she served as co- chair of the women’s health nursing divisional research utilization committee. Alongside her primary responsibilities, Ms. Young was a speaker in the field and clinical associate II at the University of Connecticut School of Nursing. For 14 years, she was on the planning committee for the March of Dimes/ Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) Nursing Symposium. She coordinated the efforts of the department of women’s health at Hartford Hospital to become designated as the first baby- friendly hospital in the state of Connecticut in 2000, which she cites as a career highlight. Ms. Young attributes her success to her determination, organization and diligent work ethic, as well as her natural ability to communicate effectively with patients and colleagues. A former member of the AWHONN and American Nurses Association, she was recognizedwith aWyeth Award in 1989 and Professional Award from the La Leche League of Connecticut in 2001. In retirement, she hopes to express her creativity through oil painting and continue to advocate for quality patient care.
