84 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine D esiring to be an educator from a young age, Dr. Arvilla Chapin Payne-Jackson is a prominent sociolinguist and anthropologist, who has been serving as a professor at Howard University in Washington since 1976 and a consultant for various federal, state, and nonprofit organizations in Washington since 1987. Drawing upon a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from American University, she obtained a PhD from the University of Pennsylvania in 1976. Currently, Dr. Payne-Jackson is collaborating with the Voices of Our Fathers Legacy Foundation and the National Center for Bioethics in Research and Health Care at Tuskegee University to convey the untold stories of the descendants of the infamous “Study of Untreated Syphilis in the Negro Male by the U.S. Public Health Service, 1932- 1972.” Citing this project as the ultimate highlight of her career, she finds fulfillment in discovering the answers to questions that were previously unanswered. Maintaining affiliation with the Society of Woman Geographers, Dr. Payne-Jackson received Certificates of Appreciation from the Voices of Our Fathers Legacy Foundation in 2018 and the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society, Inc. in 2017 and 2018, among many other accolades, fellowships and grants. Patrick also wished to share his wealth of knowledge with younger generations. The recipient of a BA from Dartmouth College and EdD from Indiana University, he taught social studies at the high school level before transitioning to an assistant, associate and full professor at Indiana University, where he taught within the School of Education beginning in 1965. Attaining emeritus status in 2004, he also served the university as a director of numerous programs. Prof. Patrick has also contributed his expertise to several texts, most notably including the five-volume set “American Governance.” The set was selected as one of the 10 best reference books in 2017, which he cites as a career highlight. He is most proud of achieving greatness in the realm of writing, and he feels satisfied with the amount of books he has authored and co-authored. As a testament to his success, he has garnered accolades from the Indiana State Bar Association, Indiana University and the Council for the Advancement of Citizenship.
