In 1953, he obtained a BA fromWilliams College, followed by an LLB from Columbia University in 1957. Admitted to practice law in New York the following year, he has also been admitted before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, the U.S. District Court for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York, and the Supreme Court of the United States. While in law school, Mr. Kaufman became further interested in pursuing law during a summer internship for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York. Driven by his dedication, persistence and passion, he aspired to become an assistant attorney. After graduation, he achieved his goal and served as an assistant U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York in the U.S. Department of Justice in 1958. Thereafter, he continued working for the U.S. Department of Justice as chief of the criminal division from 1964 to 1969. Since 1976, he has been president of Stephen E. Kaufman, PC, located in New York City. Mr. Kaufman is head of a preeminent law firm that focuses on white- collar litigation, civil litigation and criminal defense. Alongside his primary career endeavors, he has served his community as director of the Police Athletic League, Inc., and vice chairman of the Museum of Jewish Heritage. He has maintained affiliation with several organizations to remain abreast of developments in the legal industry, including the American Bar Association, the New York State Bar Association and the New York City Bar Association. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the field of law, Mr. Kaufman has been deemed a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. He also holds an AV Preeminent rating through Martindale-Hubbell. As a testament to his success, he was selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Law, Who’s Who in the East and Who’s Who in the World, beginning in 1987. When asked what advice he would give to prospective legal professionals, Mr. Kaufman advises individuals to possess a genuine commitment to the practice of law, which also includes the possibility of working in public service.
