She completed postgraduate coursework at the University of Paris. Attributing her success to her diligent work ethic and affinity for listening intently to others, she considers her greatest achievement to be bringing two countries together in mutual understanding. As a testament to her longevity in the field, she was highlighted in Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Politics, Who’s Who in the East, Who’s Who in the World and Who’s Who of American Women. Even after her retirement from government affairs, Dr. Sampas volunteered at SibleyMemorial Hospital, Johns Hopkins Health System, for 14 years. Married to James George Sampas since 1962, she is the proud mother of two children, George and Lawrence, and grandmother of four grandchildren. She enjoys reading and attending the theater in her spare time. D r. Dorothy M. Sampas is a retired Foreign Service officer who spent her 44-year long career traversing various continents in diverse government official roles. She commenced her career as a city editor for The Michigan Daily and registered lobbyist for the Michigan Legislature between 1954 and 1955 before settling into her first governmental role as amember of the Foreign Service assigned to the Bureau of Public Affairs, U.S. Department of State, in Washington, D.C. Traveling to Hamburg, Germany, soon thereafter, she served as vice consul with the U.S. Consulate General there. During the mid-to-late 1970s, Dr. Sampas was a general services officer at the U.S. Embassy in Belgium. She returned toWashington, D.C., in various management positions until traveling to Beijing, China, as a counselor, then a minister-counselor with the Embassy of the United States. From 1991 to 1994, she was a minister-counselor for the United States Mission to the United Nations, and from 1994 to 1997, she served as an American ambassador to the Islamic Republic of Mauritania.
