120 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine HEALTH AND WELLNESS D riven to enter the field of medicine by his Christian diligence, Dr. James W. Anderson first attended West Virginia University, where he received a BS in 1958. He transferred to Northwestern University before earning an MD in 1961 and completing an internship at Presbyterian/St. Luke’s Medical Center in Denver, Colorado. Soon thereafter, he completed a residency with the Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research in Rochester, Minnesota, where he also received an MS in 1965. After commencing his career as an assistant professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco in 1968, a position he held for five years, he has served as a professor of medicine and clinical nutrition at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine since 1973. He has also been the president and founder of the HCF Nutrition Research Foundation in Lexington, Kentucky, since 1979. Dr. Anderson attributes his success to his mentors, including Dr. Robert Herman, who was a pioneer in nutrition research. Because of Dr. Herman’s influence, Dr. Anderson succeeded in opening a new Veterans Affairs hospital ward at the University of Kentucky, which housed 10 additional beds. In addition, Dr. Anderson feels privileged to have worked with numerous dietitians who are knowledgeable about their fields. As a result of his passion for nutrition and diabetes research, he became the founder and chairman of the Obesity Research Network, which was comprised of 20 esteemed obesity research doctors. Together, the physicians conducted over 100 research studies. Dr. Anderson has published 15 books and more than 300 scientific publications. Dr. Anderson authored the book “The Simple Diet: A Doctor’s Science- Based Plan” in 2011 and sat on the editorial boards of many esteemed journals, such as the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Civically involved, he has been a deacon and Sunday school teacher at various Baptist churches since 1974 and has volunteered at the Mission Lexington Medical Clinic and the Salvation Army Clinic. As a testament to his success, Dr. Anderson was named a fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American College of Nutrition. JAMES W.
