ENTOMOLOGIST, TOXICOLOGIST Payson, UT D r. Douglass E. Stevenson is an entomologist specializing in integrated pest management (IPM) and pesticide toxicology. His career spans 45 years, giving aid and education to people in the U.S. and other countries. He is presently a retired Texas Extension Specialist, acting as an author, researcher and consultant. His career began in 1973 with Utah State University’s part in the nationwide Huffaker IPM Project, after which he became an entomologist for IFA Co-op and manager of Agrium’s Utah branch. Dr. Stevenson entered the public sector for EPA in Washington, followed by Texas A&M’s Agrilife Extension, where he spent 20 years aiding the people of Texas and other countries with IPM technology. He has authored 16 books and many articles. Notable achievements include applying statistical methods to field data to develop models to forecast insect pest attacks. Highlights include a rice borer model that saved enough rice to feed 140 million people in China, and a corn rootworm model that prevented annual losses of $121 million to Texas farmers. Dr. Stevenson also directed Hurricane Mitch recovery programs to aid Central American farmers who had lost everything to the storm.
