178 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine I nterested in what makes a community distinctive and valuable – such as rivers, trees and other aspects of the natural environment – Maureen B. Ogden sought to change the domination of governmental appointments by businesspeople who only had a financial concern. Attending Smith College, she earned a BA in 1950, followed later by an MA from Columbia University in 1963 and an additional master’s degree in city and regional planning from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, in 1977. After obtaining her bachelor’s degree, she served as a researcher and staff assistant at the Ford Foundation in New York City before transitioning to a staff associate of the Foreign Policy Association. Relocating to New Jersey in 1976, she was a member of the Millburn Township Committee and mayor of the Township of Millburn between 1976 and 1981. Her most recent appointment was member of the New Jersey General Assembly, a position she maintained from 1982 to 1996. Civically involved as well, Ms. Ogden has remained a trustee of the policy committee of the New Jersey Conservation Foundation since 2006, also serving the foundation as co-chair of the policy committee since 2000. Likewise, she has been chair of the Garden State Preservation Trust since 1999. When asked of her career highlights, she cites preserving New Jersey in its natural state as a crowning achievement, as significant portions of the pinelands were preserved in both northern and southern New Jersey. Believing that climate change and the environment are at the forefront of concern in today’s world, Ms. Ogden also served as chair of the assembly environment committee of the New Jersey General Assembly and vice chair of the National Affairs and Legislative Committee on Energy Sources. As a testament to her impact on her community, she received the President’s Award from the Nature Conservancy and Public Policy Award from the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 1995, as well as myriad other accolades from the New Jersey School of Conservation, the Humane Society of the United States, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Alliance for Art Education, among others.
