68 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine D r. Myra B. Weiger has been a professor in and chair of the department of elementary, middle and secondary education and educational administration at Kean University since 1970. Prior to beginning her tenure at the university as a teacher of elementary education in 1964, she previously served Gary Public Schools as a speech therapist and teacher of the deaf between 1956 and 1959. She began her career as an English teacher for Irvington Public Schools in 1956. A highly versatile and engaged educator, Dr. Weiger received a BA, magna cum laude, fromMontclair State University in 1956. She then earned an MA from Kean University in 1967 and an EdD from Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, in 1977. She is certified in elementary education, secondary English, drama, speech therapy and special education. Alongside her primary career endeavors, Dr. Weiger is actively involved with People for Animals as a longtime advocate for animal welfare. The former president of the organization, she helped establish the first low- cost spaying service and neutering clinic in New Jersey in 1985. She also helped develop the Animal Control Officers Training Course in 1982 and taught in the program for 13 years. For her service, she was honored with a Certificate of Appreciation by the Humane Society of the United States. According to Dr. Weiger, the highlight of her career was teaching English to special education students. An esteemed researcher in writing, English education and character education, she is also a frequent speaker. In order to remain abreast of developments in the industry, she maintains affiliation with the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, the Association of Teacher Educators, and the National Council of Teachers of English, for which she was previously an executive board member. In addition to being featured in multiple Who’s Who publications, Dr. Weiger received the Jean Harris Award for Devoted Service above Self from Rotary International, the Outstanding Alumnus Award from Kean University, and the Award for Promoting Aerospace Education from the Civil Air Patrol.
