73 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION P rof. Martin D. Zahn is an esteemed educator who has extensive expertise in the field of biology. Currently serving as an associate professor of biology at Thomas Nelson Community College in Williamsburg, Virginia, since 1993, he previously acted in the same capacity at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado, from 1975 to 1979. Prof. Zahn’s career has been punctuated by his honorable military service, as he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force as a commissioned second lieutenant in 1969 and advanced through the grades to become a lieutenant colonel before retiring in 1993. While serving his country, he attended Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa, where he earned a BA in 1968. He subsequently received an MPhil from Yale University in 1970. After gaining experience in the field, he obtained an MA from the University of Colorado in 1979. While completing his graduate studies, he was a National Science Foundation graduate fellow from 1968 to 1969. Equally passionate about community service, Prof. Zahn was a volunteer mental health therapist for Pikes Peak Mental Health in the late 1970s and was involved with the Center for Children and Parents in Anchorage, Alaska, in the early 1980s. He then served as a scoutmaster with the Boy Scouts of America in Eagle River, Alaska. In an effort to remain abreast of developments within his areas of expertise, he has maintained affiliation with the Virginia Association of Science Teachers, the Virginia Herpetological Society, the Virginia Native Plant Society, and the Virginia Natural History Society. As a testament to his success, Prof. Zahn has accrued several accolades. A Sloan Foundation grantee, he received a professional development grant from the Virginia Community College System (VCCS) in the 1990s and a VCCS Chancellor’s Award in 2008. He was also honored with a VCCS Technology in Education Award that same year. Notably, he was highlighted in the 65th and 68th editions of Who’s Who in America, as well as the 25th edition of Who’s Who in the South and Southwest. PROF. MARTIN D.
