ULM EDUCATION D r. Tetsufumi Ueda is a celebrated professor emeritus of pharmacology who served the University of Michigan for 38 years. Commencing his tenure as an assistant professor in the Department of Pharmacology, he also served the institution as an assistant, associate, and senior research scientist, and research professor within the Molecular and Behavioral Neuroscience Institute, as well as an associate and full professor in the department. Retiring in 2016, Dr. Ueda remains an editorial boardmember of Neurochemical Research, and has contributed articles to journals and chapters to books. Dr. Ueda is renowned for his U.S. patent for composition and methods for the inhibition of neurotransmitter uptake of synaptic vesicles, as well as the discovery of the glutamate-specific uptake system in the synaptic vesicle. This demonstration provided key evidence for the concept that the common amino acid glutamate can function as a natural neurotransmitter.
