13 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine A fter reading a poem by Thomas Gray at the age of 15, Jack Foley felt the piece encompass him in ways which he did not think were previously possible, having understood the poet on an intimate level. Fascinated by the beauty of language, he decided upon poetry as his profession and attended Cornell University, where he earned a BA in English literature. Thereafter, he received an MA in English literature from the University of California, Berkeley, where he was a Woodrow Wilson Fellow. Since that time, he has served as the executive producer-in-charge of the poetry program on Station KPFA- FM in Berkeley for more than 30 years, as well as a literary critic. He formerly served as editor-in-chief of Poetry USA in Oakland, California, for five years. Described by many as a passionate intellectual, Mr. Foley has been compared to the likes of Walt Whitman, Ezra Pound and Charles Olson, with styles akin to post-structuralism. His live performances resemble vaudeville with a hint of tap dancing, blended with an all-inviting, individual yet multitudinous, and unique presentation. Prior to her passing in 2016, Mr. Foley presented his joint poetry with his wife Adelle on numerous occasions, their pieces featuring simultaneous voices whose interrelationships reflected his belief that the mind is often contradictory. After her passing, he found a new love and performance partner in girlfriend Sangye Land, the daughter of poet Julie Rogers and stepdaughter of poet David Meltzer. Mr. Foley has published 15 books of poetry, five books of criticism, one book of stories, and a two-volume chrono-encyclopedia. His most recent work is titled “Grief Songs,” which consists of poetry dealing with the aftermath of his wife’s death. He is also expected to publish “When Sleep Comes: Shillelagh Songs” in 2019. In light of his exceptional achievements in poetry, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Berkeley Poetry Festival in 2010, and June 5, 2010 was designated as Jack Foley Day in Berkeley. He has also been featured in Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Entertainment and Who’s Who in the West.
