37 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION W hile attending Northern Arizona University as a Phelps Dodge Scholar, Dr. Lattie Finch Coor, in a sophomore class in sociology, realized he wished to spend his life as an academic. After earning a BA with high honors in 1958, he went on to receive an MA with honors and a PhD in political science from Washington University in St. Louis in 1960 and 1964, respectively. Serving Washington University in several capacities since obtaining his doctoral degree, including assistant to the chancellor, assistant dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, assistant professor of political science, and university vice chancellor between 1963 and 1976, he was invited to serve as the president of the University of Vermont between 1976 and 1989. In 1990, Dr. Coor was appointed president of Arizona State University, a post he held until 2002 when hewas appointedpresident emeritus. He has also held the positions of professor of public affairs and the Ernest W. McFarland Arizona Heritage Chair of Leadership and Public Policy. In 2002, he founded the Center for the Future of Arizona and served as president and CEO until 2018. During his career, Dr. Coor served as chairman of the board of the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges, and held two terms as a member of the board of directors of the American Council on Education. He also served as chairman of the board of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, was a member of the NCAA President’s Commission and also served as the chair of the Pacific 10 Athletic Commission. A member of Phi Beta Kappa, Dr. Coor received honorary doctorates from Marlboro College, the American College of Greece, the University of Vermont and Northern Arizona University. In addition, he was selected for several Who’s Who publications, including Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Education, Who’s Who in the East andWho’s Who in the West.
