16 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine ARTS, MEDIA AND ENTERTAINMENT A fter taking an aptitude test in high school, Fred Martin discovered his natural affinity for art and decided to pursue the profession full time. Drawing upon a BA and MA from the University of California Berkeley, he first served as a registrar at the Oakland Museum of California from 1955 to 1958 before commencing his tenure with the San Francisco Art Institute. Privileged to have witnessed the institute grow and evolve over the decades, he first acted as the director of exhibitions from 1958 to 1965 before becoming the director of the college from 1965 to 1975. From 1983 to 1992, he was dean of academic affairs, attaining the title of dean emeritus in 2015. In addition to his administrative duties, Mr. Martin is an accomplished artist who has had 55 solo exhibitions, including retrospectives in Hangzhou, China, and San Francisco, Oakland, and Pacifica, California. He has additionally been displayed in 48 group exhibitions across the United States and China, including in collections at the Academy of Fine Arts in Hangzhou, China, the Crocker Art Museum, the Farhat Art Museum in Lebanon, the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Demonstrating versatility in his profession, Mr. Martin is the author of three books: “Beulah Land” in 1966, “A Travel Book” in 1977, and “From an Antique Land” in 1979. He served as a consulting editor for Art Week from 1976 to 1992 and a Bay Area correspondent for ART International from 1967 to 1969 and again from 1975 to 1976. Furthermore, he has been a frequent lecturer for the American Psychological Association, the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design, and various universities across the United States and China. As a testament to his success, Mr. Martin has received several prizes from the Oakland Art Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Richmond Art Center and the National Endowment for the Arts. He has also been listed in several editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in the West and Who’s Who in the World. Looking toward the future, he intends to continue painting and facilitating conferences in the United States and China.
