30 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine I nterested in the biological sciences since he was a child, Dr. Peter B. Berendsen became involved in his profession after being drafted into the United States Army during his undergraduate studies in biology at Saint Mary’s College of California. After basic training, the military sent him to the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, a biomedical research institute, as a research assistant in Washington, D.C., where he completed two years as a soldier. After his honorable discharge, he completed anMS and PhD at GeorgeWashington University, receiving the latter in 1972. While studying toward his doctorate, he was also a guest worker with the National Institutes of Health for three years. In 1972, Dr. Berendsen began his teaching career at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey as an instructor, holding this role for one year before serving an assistant professor until 1981. From 1981 until his retirement in 2003, he was an associate professor. He was also an assistant dean from 1990 to 2003. In his teaching positions, he conducted research in electron microscopy and cell ultrastructure, and as an assistant dean, he was in charge of the teaching facilities. As one who believes in the importance of contributing to the education of medical students, Dr. Berendsen has contributed 25 articles to scientific journals within his areas of expertise. A former chapter president of Sigma Xi from1990 to 1991 and again from1995 to 1997, he has also been affiliated with the Microscopy Society of America, the American Association of Anatomists, the American Society for Cell Biology, and the Microcirculatory Society. Dr. Berendsen attributes his immense success to working with intelligent, diligent associates. He is a grantee of the National Institutes of Health and the American Lung Association who was featured in the first edition of Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare and the first and fifth editions of Who’s Who in Science and Engineering.
