12 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine K ate Amend commenced her career as an instructor of humanities at the City College of San Francisco and instructor of humanities and women’s studies at Diablo Valley College in 1973, holding both positions for five years. While teaching, she became involved in the women’s rights movement, where there was a wave of women filmmakers, particularly in documentaries. Deciding to take film classes, she fell in love with editing and ultimately pursued editing and documentaries as a career path. Since 1982, she has been a film editor in Los Angeles, California, where she notably edited the Academy Award-winning documentaries “The Long Way Home” in 1997 and “Into the Arms of Strangers: Stories of the Kindertransport” in 2001, for which she received an Eddie Award from the American Cinema Editors. Additionally, she edited the 2001 Academy Award-nominated documentary short “On Tiptoe: Gentle Steps to Freedom” and the Peabody Award winner “Beah: A Black Woman Speaks.” Ms. Amend is a frequent advisor at the Sundance Institute Documentary Storytelling Laboratory and the National Association of Latino Independent Producers. She has served on the board of directors of the American Cinema Editors and is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. In 2005, she was the recipient of the Inaugural Award for Outstanding Documentary Editing from the International Documentary Association. She has also been highlighted in the third edition of Who’s Who in Entertainment, as well as the 20th and 24th editions of Who’s Who of American Women. Since 1992, Ms. Amend has continued her role in academia as an adjunct professor in the School of Cinematic Arts at the University of Southern California. She holds a BA from the University of California, Berkeley, and an MA from California State University in San Francisco. In 2016, she received an honorary doctorate from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. In her spare time, she enjoys gardening, playing tennis, cooking and listening to jazz music.
