19 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine ARTS, MEDIA AND ENTERTAINMENT J Frank Sampson was inspired to delve into art from a formative age, although he was not exposed to any formal training until he attended college. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Concordia College in 1950 and Master of Fine Arts from the University of Iowa in 1952, where he also completed additional coursework between 1956 and 1959. From there, he went to Belgium as a Fulbright fellow, thus prompting the University of Colorado Boulder to hire himduring their search for a visiting artist. He commenced his career with the university as an assistant professor of fine arts from 1961 to 1967. He subsequently served as an associate professor of fine arts in 1967, soon ascending to full professor of fine arts in 1970 until attaining emeritus status in 1990. Mr. Sampson was recognized by the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Arts in 2018 and the Arvada Center of the Arts in 2003. He has had one- man shows at the Denver Art Museum in 1975 and the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis in 1954, as well as exhibitions in permanent collections throughout Colorado, Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota, Kansas and Massachusetts. His artwork has been featured at the Des Moines Art Center, the Joslyn Art Museum, the Library of Congress, Washburn University, the University of Nebraska, and the Boston Public Library, among other facilities. His work was also memorialized in a magazine article in Belgium from writer Michel de Ghelderode. Throughout his career, Mr. Sampson discovered that art was a way of life, much like a meditation that helped him reach a sense of well being. Mr. Sampson encourages younger artists to be true to themselves and conjure a strong desire to pursue the arts and work diligently. He reassures young artists that there will be challenges, successes, and failures; however, they should not be discouraged from continuing their work.
