20 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine I lkka Talvi found his love for music at the tender age of 3. Teaching himself to play violin until the age of 10, he joined his father’s orchestra and performed throughout the United States and Canada. Since then, he has traveled extensively, playing in countries such as France, Austria, Japan, South America, the Netherlands and England. Studying at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Finland, he received a diploma in violin in 1966 and also studied under such prominent musicians as Gabrielle Bouillon and Ricardo Odnoposoff in Vienna and Paris. He also took a Heifetz Master Class at the University of Southern California and attended the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia. Since 2006, Mr. Talvi has been a concertmaster at the Rainier Symphony, and since 2005, a professor at Seattle Pacific University. In previous years, he was a concertmaster at the Mostly Mozart Festival, the Waterloo Festival, the Seattle Opera, the Seattle Symphony and the Malmö Symphony. A past principal of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, he also served as a lecturer at Porin Musiikkiopisto and the Sibelius Academy from the late 1960s to mid-1970s. He was also a freelance violinist in Los Angeles between 1977 and 1980, as well as a guest concertmaster at the Seattle Symphony in the early 1980s. Likewise, he has been a soloist in the United States and Europe since 1965 and recorded such works as “Klami Violin Concerto,” “In Concordian,” “Diamond 2: Violin Concerto” and “Ein Heldenleben.” In recognition of his musical prowess, Mr. Talvi has received numerous grants in Finland from 1965 to 1975 and received the Kuusankoski Award in Finland in 1967. Married with four children and four grandchildren, he enjoys studying science, geography and medicine in his free time. A native of Kuusankoski, Finland, he currently resides in Seattle.
