32 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION D r. Gregory G. Brown is a renowned educator whose expertise lies in cell biology, particularly the interaction between nuclei and mitochondria as it relates to controlling mitochondrial gene expression. A key finding was the discovery a nuclear gene that inhibits the expression of a mitochondrial gene whose expression prevents pollen production in the canola plant Brassica napus. For 35 years, he served as a professor of biology at McGill University inMontreal, Canada, until attaining emeritus status in 2016. During his tenure, Dr. Brown also served as a research director of DNA LandMarks, Inc., an operating unit of BASF Plant Science in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, from 2001 to 2004. In addition, he was a visiting professor of genetics at North Carolina State University from 1988 to 1998, as well as a visiting researcher at Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique in Versailles, France, from 2011 to 2012. A member of the Canadian Society of Plant Biologists, he also volunteered for seven years as a board member for The Pillars Trust Fund, which is affiliated with the Archdiocese of Montreal, and the Royal Montreal Curling Club. Dr. Brown received his formal education at the University of Notre Dame, where he earned a BS in 1970, and at the City University of New York, where he received a PhD in medical science in 1977. From 1977 to 1981, he served as a National Institutes of Health postdoctoral research fellow at Stony Brook University. Dr. Brown attributes his success to his many mentors, including his high school chemistry teacher, his PhD advisor at the City University of New York, and his postdoctoral supervisor at Stony Brook University. Notably, he was selected for inclusion in the 33rd edition of Who’s Who in the World. Dr. Brown married in 1977 and was widowed in 2009. He has one daughter and two grandchildren.
