36 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION I nitially interested in delving into the nursing practice, Dr. Barbara A. Carper decided instead to pursue nursing education. After receiving her master’s degree in education in 1966, she went on to serve as an instructor at the University of New Mexico College of Nursing for three years before serving the Texas Woman’s University College of Nursing as an associate professor, professor and coordinator of the doctoral program. Throughout her tenure, she has also worked for such prominent institutions as the University of Southern Maine, Colby-Sawyer College, Regent University, and the University of North Carolina School of Nursing, where she formerly was an associate professor, coordinator of the undergraduate program, interim dean, full professor, and associate dean for academy affairs. She retired in 1999 after serving the University of North Carolina for a decade. Dr. Carper holds a BSN from Texas Woman’s University and an MEd and EdD from Columbia University. She also received a clinical certificate in anesthesia from the University of Michigan. A frequent consultant in her field, she has also conducted a plethora of workshops, lectures and seminars to share her wealth of knowledge with the medical and academic communities. In addition, she contributed myriad articles to professional journals and sat on the editorial board of Advances in Nursing Science for more than 20 years. Considering the education of the next generation of nursing professionals to be the most important aspect of her career, Dr. Carper recalls her many students, whose passions and subjects of interest were incredibly diverse and made for interesting lectures and experiences. In retirement, she enjoys contributing to her local community through various religious institutions addressing racial inequity, approaching the subject with her background in education and compassionate nature. As a testament to her success in nursing, Dr. Carper was elected a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing. She also maintains membership with the American Nurses Association, the North Carolina State Nursing Association, Sigma Theta Tau and Phi Kappa Phi. BARBARA A.
