46 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine EDUCATION P assionate about music since the age of 3, Dr. Ronald George Horner has always stood by the belief that one should pursue creative vocations in an effort to enlighten and inspire those around them. In his own life, performing and teaching music fulfills a deep-seated need, and it is this enthusiasm that led him to attend the Indiana University of Pennsylvania and earn a BS in music education in 1978. Thereafter, he received a MusM and Artist Diploma in timpani from Duquesne University, as well as a DMA from West Virginia University. He holds a professional certification in education from the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Dr. Horner began his career in Tel Aviv, Israel, as a percussionist with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra in 1978. Returning to the U.S. in 1983, he simultaneously served as the director of percussion studies at Seton Hill University and a senior lecturer of music at Frostburg State University, remaining in those roles until 1985 and 2018, respectively. From 1985 to 1996, he was an instructor of music at the University of Pittsburgh before serving as an assistant professor of music at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. In an effort to share his wealth of knowledge with his community, Dr. Horner is a music director for the Frostburg Arion Band in Maryland and formerly served the Curtis Institute of Music as a guest lecturer. Earlier in his career, he was an adjudicator for the Western Maryland Ensemble Festival and a conductor for the Bedford All County Band. In addition to writing three books, he has been an instrumental soloist for various compositions and an arranger for “Pilgrim’s Chorus.” A member of the Percussive Arts Society, Dr. Horner is also affiliated with Sons of the American Revolution, the Huguenot Society of America, the General Society of the War of 1812, and multiple honor societies. He was named Educator of the Year by the GRAMMY Foundation in 2015, though he considers performing at Carnegie Hall under the direction of Leonard Bernstein to be one of the highest points in his career. He has been featured in Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in the World.
