53 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine W hen it comes to social work, Dr. Gary R. Lounsberry has always exhibited a fervent passion for helping other people and sharing his wealth of knowledge with students. Earning the title of professor emeritus at Alfred State College in 2014, he first served as a professor of social and behavioral sciences in 2005. At the inception of his career in 1968, he was a school community agent for Detroit Public Schools Community District for two years before being commissioned as a lieutenant junior grade with the U.S. Public Health Service. Advancing through the grades to captain by 1987, he served the Public Health Service as a social worker, service unit director and mental health consultant for Indian health, career development trainee and human services consultant for Indian health services, retiring from the military in 1996. From there, Dr. Lounsberry moved to Florida, where he acted as director of social services at the Family Health Centers of Southwest Florida and an associate professor of the Bachelor’s Program and director of the School of Social Work at Florida Gulf Coast University. Dr. Lounsberry draws upon a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Rochester, MSW from the University of Michigan, and a MPH and PhD in social work from the University of Pittsburgh. A licensed specialist in clinical social work in Kansas and Florida, he was a past field instructor at such institutions as the University of Oklahoma, the University of Kansas and Barry University. Civically involved as well, he has sat on the board of directors of the Salvation Army Primary Care Clinic since 1993. Named Social Worker of the Year by the American Public Health Association, Dr. Lounsberry is notable for being part of the founding faculty of the College of Professional Studies at Florida Gulf Coast University and developing faculty of the Bachelor’s of Human Services Management Program at Alfred State College. He remains abreast of industry developments through affiliation with the National Association of Social Workers, the Commissioned Officers Association, the American Public Health Association and the Academy of Certified Social Workers.
